I'm reading "The Read-Aloud Handbook" right now, and the author suggests increasing children's attention span for stories and reading is like training for a marathon, or anything that you slowly increase in stamina for (like longer, and longer plane/car rides). And though a 5 1/2 hour plane ride isn't a walk in the park, with little ones, we think it's worth the effort.

The Plane
